Ambassadors for Print & Graphics is a comprehensive plan by the Virginia Printing Foundation to attract Virginia high school students to careers in the graphic communications industry. Ambassadors for Print & Graphics has three constituents:

➢ Schools
➢ Industry
➢ Community

The primary goal of Ambassadors for Print & Graphics is to support existing high school graphic communications programs and their instructors. Another goal is to create an Industry Advisory Committee for each school. Ambassadors for Print & Graphics also helps schools build connections with local printers.

Community outreach includes presentations at local service clubs and appearances at community forums and hearings. The local PIA affiliate, PIVA (Printing Industries of Virginia), is actively involved. A key strategy for 2008-2009 is to represent the industry at each program’s school board, with the goal of increasing funding for those graphic communications programs.

On August 5, 2009, VATIE (Virginia Association for Technical and Industrial Educators) attendees Susan Caldwell, Bill Burton, Roy McKinnis, Kevin Cherry and Michael Emanuel spent a very special day touring Worth Higgins & Associates and Graphics Gallery. Thanks to Susan Higgins and Steve Samuel for hosting our instructors. We learned about UV printing, perls, and novel ways of printing unusual substrates for unusual applications.

Especially valuable was learning about the types of exciting jobs this changing industry offers, as well as the skill sets needed by students interested in pursuing careers in graphic communications.

Ambassadors for Print & Graphics hosted a lunch at Worth Higgins & Associates for those attending.

Please consider attending this valuable event next year, and thanks to Bill Burton for organizing such a special day!

From Paul Vadeboncoeur, a work around so you can show You Tube videos in your classroom:

I found a way to watch You Tube Videos bypassing school blocked filters.

www.yourtube.us

This takes you to a separate web site where you can enter You Tube in the browse field and it will bypass filters.
That way we can show students "viable and appropriate" You Tube videos.
(at least it works until they block this site, which will probably happen as soon as they find out about it.)

Thanks, Paul!

Brian, yes -- that was wonderful. We'll see what's next.

And Hal, we ALL should put "Print Ambassador" on our cards. Excellent idea. We might try introducing ourselves this way too!

Jeff, glad to see you on board! Welcome. We do need more students. The industry predicts a huge shortage over the next 8 to 10 years. Any ideas you have will be most valuable to all of us.

This is awesome ... I am a current graphic Communications student and I think we need to get out there and get more Students interested in Print and Graphics.

State Contests

It would be hard for each state to match the national contest because of equipment availability and time. A lot of state contests are only one day long and during this time students have orientation, compete, debriefing and the contest must be score for a awards ceremony the same night.See More
