The OTHER Robin Williams you mention has two very useful books that cover the visual and technical process of type.
The first is the original “The Mac is not a typewriter” it deals with basics of type and text as well as terminology (widows orphans, etc.).

The other is the one you quote which is “The Non-Designers Design Book”. It covers many important design issues in a easy to read (and thus instruct) format. The chapters cover various concepts AND provide examples of before and after.
The chapters also contain review quizzes that can prove helpful.

I particularly like her four basic principles of Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity (whats that spell).
Both books are very useful and easy to understand as design texts without being presumptuous.

It would be good to work this info into actual software usage as part of a page design etc.

Just my 2¢ worth

State Contests

It would be hard for each state to match the national contest because of equipment availability and time. A lot of state contests are only one day long and during this time students have orientation, compete, debriefing and the contest must be score for a awards ceremony the same night.See More
