Graphic Communications Instructor
What do you do in the Graphic Communications Industry?
I am an instructor at Shawsheen Valley Technical High School in Billerica, MA. Our school is also PrintED certified. We have a full print shop from page layout to electronic prepress, using an ECRM MACO platesetter; in addition we have 2 large format printers. Our pressroom has 1- Ryobi 3302 2/c 1-Ryobi 510, 1- Heidelberg Quickmaster, 2 ABDicks, 1 of which is a T-head. We have a new polar paper cutter and a stahl pile feeder with a right angle. 3 stitchers, drill, shrinkwrap and a laminator. We also have a full service on-demand copycenter. Students spend 1 full week in shop and 1 full week in academics. They are learning the complete printing operation from start to finish including estimating and scheduling. We strive to integrate all aspects of the industry into our curriculum. Our students all attain their 10-hour general industry OSHA card in their junior year.
Explain a bit about yourself.
My focus area while in industry was prepress, first as a camera operator then transitioning into electronic prepress. Today I teach in the related classroom for 3 classes everyday then move into the shop to cover in all areas of shop with my strength in page layout and prepress. Related is the where the bookwork is taught and test are given. We also cover employability skills and OSHA. In addition to being a certified teacher I am also a certified OSHA trainer.

State Contests

It would be hard for each state to match the national contest because of equipment availability and time. A lot of state contests are only one day long and during this time students have orientation, compete, debriefing and the contest must be score for a awards ceremony the same night.See More
