Your Guide to the Printing and Graphic Communication Industry

Paul Foster

PrintED Occupational Research Activity

Over the weekend I received a request from a new teacher for occupational and wage information related to the industry so they could satisfy 2 PrintED Introduction to Graphic Communications competencies:

  • A9. Identify these major occupations in the graphic communications industry and describe the basic training needed for each: sales representative, customer service representative (CSR), prepress technician, press operator, bindery operator, and, management personnel.
  • A10. Identify basic salary/wage expectation ranges.

Rather than responding to him individually I figured I would dust off the old activity that I used when I was in the classroom, update it, and post it here for anyone who might have a similar need.

When looking at this activity please bear in mind that this was the way that I taught these competencies in my classroom, I do not claim this to be the best or only way. Below I have supplied the Microsoft Word document as well as a PDF for the activity. Please feel free to use them as is or modify it to make it your own. All that I ask is that you share your experience with the activity here by posting a comment to this blog post, positive or negative with suggestions to make it better. If you approach these competencies differently, by all means, use this as a form to share your ideas.

There are over 500 members of the Meet section at graphicCOMMcentral.com, many of whom teach PrintED in the classroom. It would be fantastic if we could use this as a tool to tap the collective knowledge to 1) satisfy needs and 2) share our methods and techniques for the benefit of all!

If, like the new teacher mentioned above, you have a need please speak up! Worst-case no one has anything to help you, best case someone offers a useful resource that saves you prep time and allows you to concentrate on what is really important---delivery of instruction in the classroom!

For those veteran teachers . . . have you given your department chair the required number of substitute lesson plans? This activity may also serve as a good emergency lesson plan . . .
